At Rio Verde Home Services, we recently completed a deck repair project in Cottonwood, AZ that turned a weathered, unsafe deck back into a solid and attractive outdoor space. Years of sun, rain, and foot traffic had taken their toll — several of the 2x6 boards were rotten and soft underfoot, and the paint was peeling badly.

Inspecting the Deck
When we first arrived, the homeowner pointed out some soft spots, but after checking the entire surface, we found several areas where moisture had worked its way into the wood. The underlying structure was still in good shape, so we focused on replacing the damaged 2x6s and refinishing the surface for protection and appearance.
Replacing the Rotten Boards
We removed all of the damaged deck boards, cutting them out cleanly to avoid disturbing the rest of the structure. Each new 2x6 board was securely fastened in place to restore strength and stability. Once the repairs were complete, the deck felt solid again — no more flexing or soft spots when you walked across it.
Power Washing and Surface Prep
Before painting, we gave the entire deck a deep power wash to strip away old, peeling paint, dirt, and mildew. Power washing is one of the best ways to prepare a weathered deck for refinishing — it opens up the grain and ensures the new coating adheres properly. After allowing the deck to fully dry, we were ready to paint.

Repainting the Deck
We applied a durable exterior deck paint designed to stand up to Arizona’s strong sun and temperature changes. The fresh paint sealed the surface, protected the new boards, and brought the deck back to life visually. The finished result was a clean, uniform look that instantly improved the home’s outdoor appeal.
Results
The difference was dramatic — the deck went from dull and damaged to sturdy, bright, and refreshed. The homeowner was thrilled to have a safe, usable space again and appreciated how well the new boards blended with the existing ones after painting.
